On October 21, 2008, RIM announced the BlackBerry Developer Conference that the company will open an application store for their devices. It was also announced that the store is scheduled to open in March 2009, and will work together with the PayPal service. On January 19, 2009, RIM began accepting submissions from the application developer.

On March 4, 2009, RIM officially named the store "BlackBerry App World" (formerly called the BlackBerry Application Storefront). It also confirms that the service will not initially be available for the desktop, and only a web-based catalog will be accessible from non-BlackBerry devices.

On April 1, 2009, at the CTIA trade show, RIM announced that App World is live.

In BlackBerry-sponsored Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES), announced that an average of 1 million applications are downloaded every day.

On August 19, 2010, BlackBerry App World 2.0 was released. This new version introduces BlackBerry ID - single sign, the system account which can be used on both the client's BlackBerry and the BlackBerry App World store desktops. In addition to the BlackBerry ID, BlackBerry App World 2.0 also introduces direct credit card billing and operator billing for AT & T Wireless customers.

On December 3, 2010, Research in Motion announced that the daily download 2 million applications per day.

On February 2, 2011, BlackBerry App World 1.2 was released. This version was introduced in-app purchase of digital goods, allowing for add-ons must be purchased within the application.
